The John Hillmer Collection

The photographs in this gallery are all by John Hillmer and are reproduced by kind permission of him. The majority of photographs are modern monochrome examples.

John has been a life long rail enthusiast and has a large collection of negatives, a modest number only of steam days (mainly shed scenes) and after a break of a few years, started taking photographs again in 1975. It was not until the mid-1990s that

he started photographing signal boxes - initially in North Wales, but this spread to the whole of Wales and then to the whole of

the UK! To complete his collection of personally taken shots of signal boxes he has 190 to go (in early Jan. 2008)! Priority given when news breaks of a box likely to be closed/demolished. It is rather good that new ones are being built such as at Barnham, which will look like a signal box and not a mini-market.
